About OA

What is OA?

Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a community that supports people who struggle with compulsive food behaviors. We want to help anyone who feels they have a problem with food, and we welcome everyone from different backgrounds and experiences. Together, they work towards finding freedom from the cycle of compulsive eating in a safe and inclusive space. This is a program that is based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, similar to many other well-known recovery programs.

How did OA get started?

OA started in 1960 in Hollywood, California, USA, with the aim of helping people with compulsive eating. The idea came from Rozanne S., who attended a Gamblers Anonymous meeting and realized that the Twelve Steps format could help her overcome her own struggles with binge eating. Rozanne wanted to create a supportive community where she and others could help each other find a better future. With two other women, Rozanne held the first ever OA meeting in Los Angeles, California.

Today, OA is a worldwide organization that has helped many people find hope and healing from their struggles with food. The current program is found in more than 75 countries and has over 60,000 members.
